Larger-than-20 TB hard drives are coming soon

A Japanese disk drive media manufacturer Showa Denko K K (SDK), has launched a newly developed  3.5-inch hard disk media (HD media) with 26 terabyte (TB) storage capacity, which is the largest storage drive in the computer industry. HDD platters are the key parts for any hard disk and affect their storage capacities, the Showa Denko Group putting latest products in the market before other manufacturers came in.

Using eSMR (Energy-assisted Shingled Magnetic Recording) technology, the manufacturer was able to develop 2.6 TB platters, allowing the production of 26 TB HDDs. These newly developed HDD platters are designed with a recording density of 1 TB/in^2, enabling the company to plan the release of HDD Media exceeding 30 TB by the end of 2023. The SDK announcement came after the launched of Western Digital launched  26TB Ultrastar DC HC670 UltraSMR and 22TB Ultrastar DC HC570 hard drives

Based on the company’s statement “We will accelerate development of new HD media further, and aim to realize near-line HDD having storage capacity of more than 30TB by the end of 2023.”

It is assumed that all the HDD platters will consist of a storage capacity of around at least 3 TB. Meanwhile, the top brands like Toshiba, Western Digital, and Seagate are also expected to manufacture large storage capacity hard drives for efficiently operating data centers and hyperscalers.

Due to the boom in cloud-computing and increase in video content, data centers need HDDs with larger storage capacity. As the largest independent HD media supplier, the  Showa Denko will continue contributing to the increases in storage capacities of HDDs in accordance with its motto of “Best in Class,” thereby supporting expansion of data economy.

According to the company’s press release:

  • As of May 9, 2022
  • Energy-assisted magnetic recording is a technology to record data on the surface of HDD media with density higher than those achieved through conventional recording technologies, by pouring energy into magnetic substances which have high connectivity and assisting reversal of magnetization.
  • Shingled magnetic recording is a technology to record data on the surface of HDD media with high density by piling up a part of magnetic layers one another like singles.

Price and Availability

Since 26TB HDDs are to be released in the first half of 2022, which increases the probability for 30TB HDDs to be launched by the end of the year or sometime early in the year 2024 as per the market conditions.  If you are still unsure about choosing the right hard disk, you can contact our hardware expert who will help you to get the best hard drives which are available in exclusive deals and discounts from Memory4Less.com.
