The Next Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors Overview

Increase Agility and Enhance Data Center Efficiency

Intel launched a new series of processor called Xeon Scalable CPUs couple of years ago by adding new features to transform critical data-centric workloads, now Intel plans to ship 3rd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors with hardware-enhanced security.

Let’s have a look at what Intel offers with the latest Intel Xeon Scalable Processors. These processors are specially built to optimize high-demand server applications, hybrid cloud infrastructure and hardware-based data centers by offering dynamic service delivery.

Intel Xeon Scalable Processors

The next generation Xeon Scalable Processor provides the best solution for high performance computing (HPC), and network transformation because they are designed with the new innovative features including Advanced Vector Extension 512 (Intel AVX-512), which optimized the workload and improves the performance. The advanced feature is Intel QuickAssist Technology (Intel QAT), that helps compress big data quickly and cryptography.

These ground-breaking processor offer a new level of platform competencies across compute, storage, memory, network, and security. Intel has a growing and distinguished collection of data centric technologies to speed up a range of business-critical workloads and help drive faster value from data. According to Lisa Spelman, vice president and general manager of Intel’s Xeon and Memory Group, said that

It allows customers to achieve improved hardware efficiency for both training and for inference without needing a tremendous amount of software work as well, which can often be the barrier to unlocking more AI performance.

Performance Upgrade Features:

  • 4.4 GHz Intel Turbo Boost Technology
  • 1.35X Enhanced Mainstream Performance
  • Increase 2X System Memory Capacity
  • 36TB Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory
  • Supports 3DDR4 2993 MT/s & 16Gs DIMMS
  • 11X AI Inference Performance Deep-Learning Intel DL Boost

Intel Xeon Scalable Processors are available in four configurations:

Intel Xeon Processors

Intel unveils a new brand for the Xeon family. The new brand is based on metals and their relative values included Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Types of Intel Xeon Scalable Processors:

Intel Xeon Platinum:

Intel Xeon Platinum Processors

These latest Intel Xeon Platinum Processors provides the best performance for secure, agile, hybrid-cloud data centers. These scalable processors are built with enhanced security features which is ideal for high performance computing (HPC), advanced artificial intelligence and analytics. The Intel Xeon Platinum Processors are featuring 28 cores, supports up-to 36TB DRAM Memory and Deep Learning Boost Technology.

Intel Xeon Gold:

Intel Xeon Gold Processors

The Intel Xeon Gold Processors comes with higher memory speeds, and enhanced memory capacity. These processors bring major improvement in performance, advanced reliability, and hardware-enhanced security. This family mainly supports data center, multi-cloud computing and huge storage workloads. These scalable processors offer up to 28 cores / 48 threads and feature Turbo Boost Technology 4.0. The Intel Xeon Gold Processors are fast and supports DDR4-2933 MT/s and 16Gb DIMMs per socket for increased performance.

Intel Xeon Silver:

Intel Xeon Silver Processors

The Intel Xeon Silver Processors provide efficient performance at low power and improved memory speed. Improved Hardware performance required for entry data center computes, network, and storage. These Intel Xeon Silver Processors offers up to 16 cores / 20 threads and up to 1.5TB memory capacity.

Intel Xeon Bronze:

Intel Xeon Bronze Processors

The Intel Xeon Bronze Processors provide entry level performance for small business computing and necessary storage solution for servers. With up-to two sockets, these highly scalable processors feature 8 cores / 8 threads and supports 1TB memory capacity. The Intel Xeon Bronze Processors are affordable, build with hardware-enhanced security features and delivers best solution for servers.

Generations of Intel Scalable Processors:

1st Generation:

Intel’s first Generation Xeon processors were introduced in July 2017. These processors were built on enhanced 14nm+ process based on the “Skylake microarchitecture”. They are specifically designed for high performance servers and data center applications. These Skylake Processors starts from 8100 Series and feature up to 28 processor cores per socket. They are compatible with Socket LGA-3647 Motherboards and support up to 1.5 TB of 2,666MHz DDR4 memory.

2nd Generation:

Intel’s second-generation Xeon Scalable processors was introduced in early 2019. These processors are built on an enhanced 14nm process based on the “Cascade Lake microarchitecture”. The 8200 Series features up to 28 cores and 9200 Series features up to 56 cores. These processors are compatible with Socket LGA-3647 Motherboards, support AVX-512, Optane DC Memory for faster DDR4 DRAM, and 4 PCI-E lanes if compared to old generation Xeon processors.

3rd Generation:

Intel’s third Generation Xeon processors were unveiled in June 2020. These high-end Scalable processors are available in 4- and 8-socket configurations in Gold and Platinum versions only. The 3rd gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors (codename Cooper Lake) are specifically designed for large enterprise users, focusing on artificial intelligence. The company is also introducing Optane persistent memory, new Intel SSDs and a new AI-focused FPGA. These Cooper Lake processors support up to six channels of DDR4-3200 ECC memory and features PCIe 3.0 connectivity. They also support Intel Ultra Path Interconnect, Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 Technology and Intel Hyper-Threading Technology.
