When Intel launched first-generation Xeon Scalable Processors in 2017, they marked not only a new branding for server processors but they also built a new mesh architecture that improved connectivity between the processors’ cores compared to the ring architecture which was previously used for server CPUs.
Intel is currently offering third-generation and second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors including Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. The new 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors deliver an average of 1.36-times higher performance if compared with the 1st Gen Intel Xeon processors.
The 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors (codename Cascade Lake) built with artificial intelligence (AI) acceleration, Intel’s DL Boost technology and Optane persistent memory. Other technical enhancement provided by both generations of Xeon Scalable Processor included the addition on VMB (Volume Management Device) and Quick Assist Technology.
The 2nd Generation XEON CPUs also brings additional features including support for faster DDR4 DRAM, new AVX-512 VNNI instructions for AI applications, and hardware support to protect against Spectre and Meltdown mitigations.

Four Intel UPI (9200 Series) and up to three UPI (8200 Series) channels increase scalability of the platform to as many as two sockets (9200 series) and up to eight sockets (8200 Series). Intel UPI offers the perfect balance between improved throughput and energy efficiency.

Same like Platinum, The Intel Xeon Gold family also has two different model lines. The Intel Xeon Gold 6200 and 5200 series processors. The 6200 series processors support up to four CPU Sockets, 28 cores (per processors), 4.5 GHz frequency and handle 2933 MT/s DDR4 memory with 3 UPI (Ultra Path Interconnect) speed.
