AI Driven 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processors

AI Driven 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processors

The Most Advanced CPU for AI Workloads and High Performance Computing

After the release of second-generation Xeon Scalable processors, now Intel is officially introducing its 3rd Generation Xeon Scalable Processors family. These high-end processors code-named “Cooper Lake / Cedar Island” is built for DL (deep learning), virtual machine (VM) density, in-memory database, MCA (mission-critical applications) and analytics-intensive workloads.

The new third gen scalable processors come with a new set of instructions, aimed at the high end of the performance line for functions such as high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI). These latest Cooper Lake Processors offers up to 1.93x more AI training performance for image classification if compare to the first generation Scalable CPUs. Intel is going beyond on AI through the specific hardware features on 3rd Gen Xeon Scalable processors and its first AI-optimized FPGA chips.

3rd-Generation Intel-Xeon Scalable Processors

According to the Lisa Spelman, Intel corporate vice president and general manager, “The ability to rapidly deploy AI and data analytics is essential for today’s businesses. We remain committed to enhancing built-in AI acceleration and software optimizations within the processor that powers the world’s data center and edge solutions, as well as delivering an unmatched silicon foundation to unleash insight from data.”

Moreover, Intel also announced a range of other products including Optane Persistent Memory 200 series, high-capacity 3D NAND SSDs, and the world’s first AI-optimized FPGA called Intel Stratix 10 NX FPGAs which are advanced featuring expanded AI Tensor blocks, integrated HBM memory, and high bandwidth networking.

Difference Between 2nd Generation and 3rd Generation

The two major difference between the Second Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processors and Third Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processors is that the generation number is updated and the ‘H’ was added for the platform. The H is important because Intel is using the H to avoid the confusion.

What’s Upcoming in the 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processor?

The new 3rd Generation Xeon Scalable CPUs are optimized and interconnected with a focus on speed without compromising data security. Here are some new value-added features:

Optimize Performance:

New features added such as Intel AVX-512 (Advanced Vector Extension) improve with workload performance and increases for advanced analytics, HPC (high performance computing) applications, and data compression.

Operate More Efficiently:

High-speed Integrated Intel Ethernet (up to 4x10GbE) help to reduce power consumption and improves transfer latency of large storage blocks and virtual machine migration that lowers the system cost.

Improve Security:

Extend advance security to protect data and system operations without compromising workload performance.

Accelerate Critical Workloads:

Improve upload data compression and cryptography speed with integrated Intel QAT (QuickAssist Technology).

New Intel Speed Select Technology (Intel SST):

Intel Speed Select Technology is a collection of features giving you more granular control over processor performance for optimized total cost of ownership. With Intel SST, one server can do more.

Designed for One and Two-Socket Platforms

These Cooper Lake Processors are introduced first on platforms supporting four- and eight-socket designs. Coming soon, Intel will announce additional 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors to support one- and two-socket platform designs.

Key Enhancements:

  • Intel SST-CP and Intel SST-TF Features
  • Up to 28 cores per Intel Xeon Scalable processor
  • Intel Deep Learning Boost with bloat16 and VNNI
  • 6 memory channels per processor at up to 3200 MT/s (1 DPC)

As per Intel Statement “These New 3rd Gen Xeon Scalable family delivers a 90% average performance improvement over a 5-year-old Xeon platform and up to a 98% increase in database performance. Built with the included DL boost technology with BFloat 16 instructions, the Xeon Cooper Lake family delivers 93% higher performance versus Cascade Lake CPUs and 90% higher performance versus the last-gen CPUs”.
