Cisco Catalyst 3850 & 3750X enterprise series switches include innovative StackPower technology features that provide power redundancy solutions for fixed-configuration of switches.

The feature in Cisco WS-C3750X-24T-L Series Switch unifies individual power supplies of each switch and creates a single stack which is powered from multiple power supplies.

This StackPower feature allows up to four switches to be configured in a Cisco StackPower stack with special cables. The Cisco StackPower cable is different from Cisco StackWise cable and is available in all Cisco Catalyst 3850/3750X models.

The Cisco Catalyst StackPower technology can be deployed in two modes:

StackPower Sharing Mode Configuration:

This is the default mode of operation in both 3850 and 3750X Cisco Catalyst series. If the power supply fails, the devices in this configuration are shut down. The power of all four switches in the power stack is aggregated and treated as a single power source. Due to sharing mode configuration, all switches in the stack can power other ports connected to Power over Ethernet (PoE) ports.

StackPower Redundant Mode Configuration:

In redundant mode configuration, the power from the largest power supply system is subtracted and held as a reserve. This means the PoE devices are exposed to reduced power supply. In the event of a power failure, this provides power backup to maintain operations. Due to this configuration, less power is being provided to the pool of switches but the possibility of shutting down switches due to extreme power load is reduced.

For improved power redundancy across the stack ring, Cisco recommends deployment of Cisco 3750X StackPower Enterprise Series in redundant power mode.
